A penalty goal to hooker Tapia Solu in Golden Point extra time has seen the Hela Wigmen claim their third Papua New Guinea National Rugby League Digicel Cup title.
An intense Final on Saturday at the National Football Stadium, poor discipline by the Rabual Gurias proved to be the only difference after the two teams were locked up at 6-all at the end of regular time and extra time.
In front of a capacity crowd, the first points of the game came in the 15th minute when referee Ben Cummins awarded the Wigmen a penalty in front of the posts in which Tapia Solu converted to give Hela a 2 – 0 lead.
Gurias scored the only try of the first half in the 35th minute when winger Dominic Anis Jnr scored in the corner, giving the New Britain based side a 4 – 2 lead a half time.
Gurias extended their lead in the 52nd minute through a penalty goal to give themselves a 6 – 2 lead with the Hela based outfit scoring their first try in the 70th minute through Siki Konden. Alan Simbiri missed that conversion which saw the score locked up a 6 – all, which is remained until Tapia Solu’s penalty goal in the 98th minute.
