On behalf of the Papua New Guinea National Rugby League Competition (PNGNRLC) Board, Chairman Mr Adrian Chow congratulated PRK Mendi Muruks for winning the 2022 Digicel Cup minor premiership shield as well as the teams that made the finals series.
“I take this opportunity to congratulate PRK Mendi Muruks for finishing the regular season on top. It was my great pleasure to present the Don Fox Memorial Minor Premiership Shield to their captain Charlie Simon after their win over PRK Gulf Isou at Lae Rugby League Ground on Sunday,” Mr Chow said.
“Congratulations also to our top 6 teams who have qualified for the finals, with special mention of Central Dabaris who have qualified 5th in their 4th year of participation. We are looking forward to bringing exciting rugby league to our passionate supporters over the next four weeks,” he said.
Mr Chow added that the Round 17 fixture in Lae, the Lae Tigers was awarded a win by forfeit over Jiwaka Provincial Government Waghi Tumbe for the latter’s failure to field a team as required. Short notice was received alleging security reasons, however, it was determined that the primary reason for failure to field a team was due to management issues.
“Failure to field a team for the fixture was a breach of Clause 6 of the Participation Agreement. The PNGNRLC Board will be considering further action regarding this matter as it has brought the competition into disrepute,” Mr Chow further added.
Mr Chow went on to remind franchises to settle outstanding registration fees or be at risk of future participation.
The annual Digicel Cup Awards night is scheduled for Wednesday 21st September 2022. The Digicel Cup grand final will be brought forward one day to Saturday 24th September 2022 to avoid any clash
