Rugby League returns to the island of Espiritu Santo in Vanuatu this weekend when the inaugural Icon Reeves Luganville Nines kicks off.
Taking place at the Lycee de Lugainville Fields in Vanuatu’s second largest city, the tournament sees the code return to Santo for the first time since COVID-19 hit.
The tournament will feature teams from across Vanuatu’s largest island as well as the neighbouring Malo island, with the top players to be selected for the Sanma Provincial team. The Sanma Provincial team will play a Shefa Provincial side on November 9 to close out the 2021 Vanuatu Rugby League season.
The Luganville Nines is the second Nines tournament run by the Vanuatu Rugby League in 2021, with the Vanuatu Police Forces and Port Vila Warriors recently winning the Port Vila Nines on the Island of Efate.
Rugby League was first established on the island of Espiritu Santo in 2012.
